Piedmont, all around you
Canelli, capital of Asti Spumante
Underground cathedrals, right beneath your feet.
Canelli is one of the six historic wine towns of the "Vineyard Landscape of Piedmont: Langhe-Roero and Monferrato", a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2014. Beneath its streets lie the Cattedrali Sotterranee — more than 20 kilometres of vaulted brick tunnels cut up to 40 metres into the soft tufo stone in the second half of the 1800s, where the great Spumante and Moscato houses still age their wines today.
A town worth a slow walk.
Canelli carries the Bandiera Arancione, the Touring Club Italiano's mark for Italy's finest small towns, and is watched over by the eleventh-century Castello di Canelli — home to the Gancia family since 1927, whose founder Carlo Gancia created Italy's first sparkling wine.
Truffle country, half an hour away.
South-west of Canelli, Alba (about 35 minutes by car) is the world capital of the white truffle, celebrated every autumn at its famous truffle fair, and the gateway to the Langhe hills of Barolo and Barbaresco.
Asti, the Palio and the Spumante.
A short drive north (about 25 minutes) brings you to Asti, home of Asti Spumante DOCG and the historic Palio di Asti, one of Italy's oldest horse races.
Moscato hills on every side.
The vineyards around Canelli grow the Moscato grapes behind Moscato d'Asti and Asti Spumante, and offer some of the prettiest walking and cycling routes in Piedmont.
Turin is around an hour and a quarter away by car, making CanelliStay a comfortable base for exploring the whole of Piedmont — from vineyards and truffle markets to the Alps on the horizon.

A less common but sometimes convenient option.

Once you’ve arrived, much of everyday Canelli can be enjoyed on foot, so you can leave the car behind until you’re ready to head out and explore the vineyards, villages and wider Piedmont countryside.
Public on-street parking is available immediately outside the house, subject to availability. Spaces are not reserved.
